Nathan Little went into Whitman's to get something to drink. When he came out he thought someone had stolen his truck. Looking across Highway 195, he saw the top of the red freezer in the back of his Ford pickup. Barely visable, the truck was in a ditch next to Phil's Restaurant but not just in the weeds. His truck from which he sells meat for the Hickory House Custom Cuts of Russellville, apparetly had rolled away from Whitman's, crossed the road and down an enbankment into the fence around an Alagasco natural gas line pumping station. The impact broke a pipe and started a leak. Haleyville police and firemen blocked the highway and evacuated the immeadiate area and waited for the gas company. Coming from Birmingham, repairmen quickly cut and plugged the pipe to stop the leak. The road was reopened and Whitman's was able to get back to business without another misforunate incident following the holdup earlier in the day and the runaway truck. |
